On August 28, 2018, Afya Baltimore Inc. (ABI), the operator of Afya Public Charter School (6-8) and Brehms Lane Public Charter School (PreK-5), was approved by the Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners to combine the schools into a zoned, dual-facility PreK-8 public charter school. ABI held Information & Listening Sessions for the Belair-Edison community on December 12, 2018 and March 20, 2019. After many meetings and months of research and consulting with stakeholders, we recommended The Belair-Edison School as the new name for the merged school. On May 28, 2019, the School Board approved the re-naming of the schools. The official date when the two schools become one school is July 1, 2019. The elementary grades will remain at 3536 Brehms Ln. and the middle grades will remain at 2800 Brendan Ave. Both principals – Diya Slayton at the elementary level and Tiffany Halsey at the middle school – will also remain in place so that each campus has leadership on site.
The Belair-Edison School unifies Afya and Brehms and represents our commitment to the neighborhood. Our mission, which we will now call The Afya Way, will continue to focus on providing our students with an engaging and equitable education: intellectually, socially/emotionally, and physically.
