Student Achievement

Two boy student wearing safety gogglesAfya Public Charter School has a history of high academic performance. During the school's first five years, Afya performed well above the city average on state tests in both reading and mathematics. This performance was one reason for the school receiving a full five year contract after its first renewal, in 2012.

Two years ago, Maryland transitioned away from the Maryland State Assessment (MSA) to the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessments. Afya remains committed to achieving at high levels on this new assessment. To see how the school has performed on the PARCC see the 2016 Maryland Report Card

Achievement is defined and celebrated in many other ways at Afya. About 40 percent of 8th graders, for example, earn entry to criterion based high schools in the city, including Baltimore City College, Baltimore Polytechnic High School, Western High School, and Dunbar High School. Students from Afya also consistently get accepted to private schools around the area, including Cristo Rey Jesuit High School and Calvert Hall College.

Afya students are also very active in athletic and academic competitions. Our teams regularly compete in and win titles in different sports leagues in which we participate, including basketball and flag football. Our students have competed in national competitions in track and field. Students from Afya also compete in and achieve accolades in debate and National Academic League competitions.

An additional area where our students strive to achieve and make a difference is in citizenship. Throughout the school year our students participate in service learning activities, including cleaning up nearby Herring Run Park and working there to eradicate invasive plants, and raising money to support breast cancer awareness and prevention.

Opened in 2008, Afya Public Charter School earned a full five-year charter renewal from Baltimore City Public Schools in 2012. Afya's 2012 School Effectiveness Review (SER) and Renewal Report, performed by BCPSS, are available for your review. Afya is up for renewal again this year in 2017. Results of the 2017 School Effectiveness Review (SER) are available, and the charter renewal application will be submitted to City Schools in September 2017.
