The Belair-Edison School is a place where parents and families feel proud to be, feel that their voices are heard and respected, and feel that the educational hopes and dreams that they have for their children can be realized.
The community schools coordinators at each campus, together with our elementary and middle school principals, create and run family forums each month. At these meetings, parents learn about curriculum and assessment and how their child is performing; they talk about and plan for engagement activities; and they engage in decision-making around the direction of the school.
Parents participate in the daily life of the school in many other important ways. A highlight in this area is the mid-year conference in the middle school, where students run a conference with their advisor and parents/guardians, and they talk about their progress intellectually/academically, socially/emotionally, and physically/nutritionally. Students then work to set goals for the rest of the year. Annually, more than 90 percent of families participate in these conferences.
Parents also come to the school's many celebrations, including the annual Afya Mile run, which takes place each May. In this event, parents run and celebrate the Afya mission, alongside staff and students.
